Worthwhile?

A little context:
Erik is the guy who asked (or demanded rather) that I sign up for the [-=I.S=-] Clan Forums so it would be easier for him to send out notices of Clan practices and matches. Although I don’t like forums very much, I complied because it made his life easier, and it was really not very hard for me. Then, this…

I guess he’ll have to email me now…

Erik: is there a meeting tomorow/
Erik: ?
Ryan: neg
Ryan: next is Friday the 7th
Erik: damn
Erik: ok
Ryan: parents meeting the 6th
Erik: when is the kcikoff?
Ryan: 8th
Erik: lol ok
Ryan: its going to b e the 6 days of the TRC
Ryan: Wednesday is leadership, then thrusday is parents, the friday is students, then saturday is kickoff, then sunday is strategy meeting, then monday is first build meeting (maybe)
Erik: saturday is stragey too :)
Erik: but that is fun
Erik: to tell you the truth that is my fav part
Ryan: yeah
Erik: the first 2 days
Ryan: because you wave your arms a lot and then slack off the rest of the time? :-)
Erik: I really do not enjoy coding, and even phisical building does not interest me all that much
Erik: lol I was a VERY good arm waver!
Ryan: well, what does interest you?
Ryan: thats what we want to find
Ryan: first two days
Ryan: what else?
Erik: lol idk after that
Ryan: you participate with the TRC cause of the first two days?
Ryan: you seem to like making web pages
Erik: I like the desgning part, but as you well know some times you have to shoot the engienr
Ryan: but you don’t want to work on the web site
Ryan: you seem to like computers
Erik: never said that (site)
Ryan: but you don’t want to program or use any of the TRC’s thousands of dollars of software
Erik: I said I did not want to take over the site
Ryan: ah
Ryan: kk
Ryan: well, I’m working on the site now
Erik: fun fun
Erik: so, waht could I do for the site?
Erik: oh, and I would be very interested in fundraising, jsut not a leadership role in it
Ryan: help me find things that need to be updated
Erik: when does FIRST tell us?
Erik: one big thing, the sponsorship thing needs to be in the menu
Ryan: when does FIRST tell us what?
Erik: what we need for het website award
Ryan: what sponsorship thing?
Ryan: January 8th
Erik: the thing that tells ppl how to sponsor us
Ryan: everything happens on January 8th
Erik: it is onl the right hand
Erik: banner
Ryan: ah
Ryan: ok
Ryan: I see what you mean
Erik: it needs to be in the menu, yah
Ryan: join up to TRC-web mailing list
Ryan: and send out a list :-)
Erik: why? I can talk to like this easyer
Erik: and am more likely to really do it
Erik: the mailing list menu does not work
Erik: or is there no menu?
Erik: cuz it makes it look liek it, but nothign drops down
Ryan: its just a link
Ryan: and the reason for using the mailing lists
Erik: well that seems like slightly bad design to me
Ryan: is so that there is a trail
Ryan: of what we did and why
Erik: I keep logs
Ryan: so that in the future
Ryan: people can look back
Ryan: and see what happened
Ryan: so they don’t have to reinvent the wheel every year
Erik: and it takes about 500 times more time
Ryan: you exagerate
Erik: yes
Erik: but really, alteast 50
Erik: it takes about 10sec to see something and send it to you
Erik: so maybe like 25
Erik: which is still allot
Erik: more than I want to spend
Erik: on something that seems to work for me
Erik: ok, big point
Ryan: well, I won’t remember what you said here in a few minutes
Erik: our site serves almost no point
Ryan: but in an email, I see it over and over until I fix get to it
Erik: the only thing useful is the update thing on the left
Ryan: “our site serves almost no point” how so?
Ryan: hm
Erik: very liitle of it serves a useful perpous
Erik: do u see what I am saying?
Ryan: only a little bit
Ryan: I mean
Ryan: pictures are useful
Erik: not really
Erik: how does that serve makeing a robot?
Ryan: we sued those pictures for making the brochure
Erik: ok
Erik: but they dont need ot be on a site
Ryan: hm, you seem to have missed 95% of the point of FIRST
Erik: maybe
Ryan: another child left behind…
Erik: but I am sure pictures is not that great a role
Erik: what is the word for jobs that are created but serve no useful perpous outside of themselves; i.e. a farmer = useful, a banker is not
Erik: there is a word
Ryan: service industry?
Erik: no
Erik: there is an edjective
Erik: adjective*
Ryan: but that entire notion is wrong. A banker is useful
Erik: not if money is not
Erik: money does not feed people
Erik: that is the point
Ryan: well, last time I checked, people buy food with money.
Erik: but I was not trying to prove the point, I wanted to know the word
Erik: but the money is exes
Ryan: haha, I know. but every time we talk, it boils down to politics
Ryan: superfluous?
Erik: why not get rid of the money and send them to help were it really is
Erik: no
Ryan: wait, what’s your idea?
Erik: it is NOT a common word
Ryan: get rid of money, so we’re back to a barter economy?
Ryan: I’m afraid I don’t know the word you’re talking about. Its not in my vernacular
Erik: well hehe it really all goes back to comunism but maybe that ais a steping stone
Ryan: well, go found your little communist paradise, but leave me out of it please
Erik: I only leaned it about 1 year ago, forgot, but I have a pretty damn big vocab
Erik: dont worry… your not invted :)
Ryan: you sure use a lot of four letter words so someone so blessed with a large vocabulary
Ryan: */for someone/
Erik: lol
Erik: that is because most words can be expressed with a few 4 letter ones
Erik: and one carries more weight with most ppl, and its the latter
Ryan: and I guess you just have that many important things to say
Erik: ?
Erik: hehe ok
Ryan: :-)
Ryan: but
Ryan: what were we talking about?
Ryan: you think the entire point of the web site is to facilitate building a robot?
Erik: I guese not
Erik: but I dont thing it does anything for FIRST
Erik: either
Erik: like for example the pictures
Ryan: I don’t care about FIRST. I like the mission, but I’m actully pretty ambivalent about the mechanism. I do care about the TRC, though
Erik: ok, so waht do TRC students get out of the site?
Erik: like, again, for example the pictures
Ryan: They can show people what they’re talking about from anywhere in the world. But its not neccesarily for TRC members
Ryan: it could be to show to other people what the TRC does
Ryan: for example
Erik: other than fundraising why do we care?
Erik: if its for the TRC
Ryan: Well, I guess fundraising isn’t an important enough reason on its own. People browse the pictures. Other teams browse them. Strangers browse them. Perhaps it could be done better, more like a story, but they are a point of itnerest. Picture albums always are. Maybe they don’t appeal to you, but I’m glad we have them, because they do appeal to some people
Ryan: “Well, I guess fundraising isn’t an important enough reason on its own.” < ---- that was sarcasm, btw Erik: jsut cuz ppl brows them does not make them helpful to the TRC first Erik: second, how many fundraisies' desicions do you sincerly believe really hing on how great our site is Ryan: 1. It helped win two webite awards. That was useful, (maybe). Ryan: 2. None (or maybe one, maybe) Erik: i dont really thik so Ryan: you can think whatever you want, I guess? Erik: yep Ryan: you don't have to contribute to the photo albums Erik: its your decision wether that matters to you Ryan: You don't have to look at the images Erik: nope Ryan: you can use a firefox plugin to block them in fact Erik: but just cuz I do not drive the robot does not mean I can write buggy code Ryan: uh, what? explain? Erik: I mean, so much time is spent on this site (that could be spent doing something I would believe to be of more value) and I don't believe we get anything out of it Erik: bad analogy Erik: I think we have beat this point past death Ryan: well, what's a more useful activity than working on the site? Ryan: I've spent about 2 hours on it in the past several months Erik: well at the current time funraising Erik: ok Ryan: well, go raise money. I'm burned out raising money. Erik: how long u spent on rasing money? Ryan: about the last 5 years Erik: no come on, how many hrs you think this season? Ryan: maybe 100 Erik: that is like more than all our leadership combined Ryan: yes Ryan: and amy's spent more time than that Erik: 100? Ryan: more Erik: and we havce raised 50$?!?! Erik: maybe we should all just go out and get "TRC jobs" Ryan: a little more than that Ryan: maybe you should, yeah Ryan: I already have one Ryan: as do dave and Larry Erik: your being anoying Erik: and I tihnk you know why Ryan: what do you mean by that exactly? How much have you contributed to the TRC recently? Erik: like 1hr Ryan: thats pretty good Erik: and I mean you are being anoying as in you know exaclt what I mean Ryan: more than our CEO Ryan: actually, I have no idea Erik: isnt Cheuk taken over that job Erik: usualy you have a clue Erik: but decide to take the other ruite Ryan: wait Ryan: you mean the "TRC jobs" things? Erik: yes Erik: jobs to gain money for the TRC Ryan: yeah, but what am I being annoying about Erik: you guys jobs are not for the TRC Ryan: I do have a TRC job - its flexible enough for me to spend time with the TRC and I contribute a fairly large amount of money to the club. Same with Dave and LArry Ryan: Their time is worth a lot more than mine too Erik: yes, but your job intent is NOT the TRC Ryan: is it not? Erik: I believe not Ryan: I could be going to school someplace out of town, but I choose not to. I could be working in alaska for twice this, but I choose not to. I could put in 40 or more hours a week, but I choose not to, for one major reason Erik: yes ik Erik: but the intent of you getting a job, maybe it could be a dif one, but I do not believe your intent in take thing a job in general is gaining money for the TRC Ryan: as in, I keep more than I give to the TRC in terms of money, this is true Erik: well not my point but ok Ryan: but I really don't think your in a position to be questioning my dedication Erik: I never said I was Erik: you lead us down this road not me Ryan: and sometimes I wonder why I try Erik: one thing we both can agree on Erik: as I am really tired of fighting you on everypoint, onto another issue, have you ever used trinux? Ryan: nope Erik: damn Attempt to warn #1: *** Error while sending IM: Request denied Attempt to warn #2: *** Error while sending IM: Request denied Successful block: *** "Erik" signed off at Thu Dec 16 23:44:46 2004.

One Response to “Worthwhile?”

  1. Erik Says:

Hmm… Give new meaning to the “I’m blogging this” t-shirts, You need a buddy icon Ryan :)

    My fav part is this:
Attempt to warn #1: *** Error while sending IM: Request denied
Attempt to warn #2: *** Error while sending IM: Request denied

But yah, I really did not mean any of the “you not having a first job” to be at all a personal attack. When I brought up a “FIRST job” I meant it purely as a joke, saying that it would be a more effective form of fund raising. Taking theoretical situations personally usually never result in good things.

I would also like to point out that I said:
Erik: I think we have beat this point past death
before it really got heated at all.

I did notice you have started appearing on my buddy list again…
