I don’t think it’s a matter of truth. I think it’s a matter of self esteem. It’s quite likely when they asked a question like that they weren’t interested in the actual question, nor the answer to it. What they were really asking could have been, “Can you tell me something that boosts my self-esteem?”
Sadly, very, very few people are able to communicate their ACTUAL questions, and instead cover it up with horrible hints you’re supposed to magically understand. Most people don’t even realize they’re doing it, or that they didn’t even care about the question.

Sometimes the truth hurts. Of course, sometimes honesty isn’t the right course of action either.
