Brickified

Downloading the most recent “critical update” from Windows Update on my desktop machine effectively tanked it, turning it into little more than a large, pretty, rainbow-colored brick.

I’m kind of pissed off, but its not so bad since I was planning on reinstalling anyway (to get the full effect of RAID 0 striped over 4 HDDs), but seriosuly, M$, get your act together. If this had happened to this here laptop, I would be enhosified [hosed].

Have you tried “configuration last known good?” Want me to take a look at it before declaring it dead?

When starting up normally, it hangs with the Windows XP logo on the otherwise black screen with the Blue progress bar below.
When starting in safe mode, it gets to multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partiition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\agp440.sys after loading a buch of other drivers, then it tells you to press ESC to NOT load d346bus.sys. Wether I hit escape or not, the system still freezes after just a little bit more disk activity.

My current plan is just to boot from a CD, copy over the files I don’t want to loose, and reformat for the 4 x 80gb RAID 0 array I’ve been planning. I’ve been waiting for motivation to do that anyway – this seems to be the perfect opportunity.

    Hey Ryan,

I don’t know if you have heard of this before; I have only heard of it, I haven’t used it. It certainly looks like it might come in handly in a situation like this, though. Bart’s Preinstallation Environment. Sort of like a Windows Live CD.
