Of course, all of this requires a good name. It just so happens that during the last round of name-searching for my laptop, which is now known as Graphitica, another good name came up, which was totally appropriate for this new computer. I present to you, BlackOrchid.

Very nice! Are you running a 64 bit OS to take advantage of all the memory? I’ve considered upgrading to one of Intel’s new 45nm quad core machines. Surprisingly, unlike most of my other upgrades, this one wouldn’t be gaming inspired. I find that I do a lot of video encoding and photo work and more and more, the applications I am using are actually making good use of multi-threading. The main hold up has been lack of time and the frustrating thought of the extensive process of setting up my software environment. My current system really isn’t holding me up in any ways, it is just the usual lust for speed. I may just hold off till 8 core procs are out and put my money into a ReadyNAS, so I can pull out most of the drives from my current system and quiet down my room a bit.

Impressive indeed! I like the name, too. I just built another PC last night so I’ll be blogging about that soon. It pales in comparison, though, as far as specs go.

I think I remember Black Orchid is famous in something…a scary movie or a novel. So I think it’s a perfectly appropriate name for your computer. And when are you coming East again? Your folks are coming in about 10 more days.
