Insomniac

I could not stay asleep last night for the life of me. The result was me sleeping in until just now and missing out on opportunities to play ultimate and paintball. Suck.

In my “not a doctor” opinion you need to physically exhaust yourself- when you find yourself in such a state start doing exercises or something, wear your body down to a point where your mind has to cave in and let it sleep. However blanking the mind is something I haven’t yet mastered but I suggest reading the Old Testament. Deuteronomy is good for putting the mind to sleep. Especially when it starts into the family genealogies.

I have found that the advice from Steve Pavlina to work well. Basically – set a time for yourself to wake up and adhere to it 100% (excusing yourself in dire emergencies). I did this for a while (I need to get back into the habit) and it really works – the first few days are a bit rough, as your body needs to figure out when if needs to go to bed, but if you consistantly get up at say… 0500 and stay up the rest of the day, I guarentee you that you will be tired enough to go to sleep around 2300 that evening.

I have tried exercise before bed, but find that I am definitely one who needs to settle my mind first in order to sleep, no matter my level of physical exhaustion. If I don’t I will either not be able to get to sleep or will wake up within about 2 hours. I usually read 1-2 hours before bed. There is something about reading that is quite hypnotic, in the sense that it engages only selective parts of your brain and “sucks you in,” letting you shut out the world and all its many sources of over-stimulus.
