Remember
In the movie V for Vendetta, the 5th of November plays a vital role:
Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
I know of no reason
Why Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.
But the crux of the movie is this:
People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people.
Which is an eloquent way to explain why I decided to donate $100 towards Ron Paul’s 2008 Presidential campaign today. While I am not afraid of my government in the corporeal sense (yet), I am afraid of where my government is headed. Ron Paul is only the only politician in the fray who offers any hope of changing the direction my government is headed more than a few degrees. And I do believe there are icebergs out there, waiting to sink this ship. Not today, probably not tomorrow, not perhaps for a hundred years. But we’re steaming towards them, and not many in government today care.

Probably hard to believe, but I had no idea that Ron Paul supporters were using the 5th of November as a fundraising tool until I received an email about it a few minutes ago.
Free minds sometimes think alike. At least they don’t have to.

Ron Paul is interesting to me because he votes pretty consistently according to a set of publicly stated principles, which is more than you can say about a lot of politicians. I think that enough of his political views are well outside the normal range of acceptance to most registered Republicans that he is going to have a hell of a time winning in the primary elections unless he can garner significant support from unlikely voters. I believe this is the perception/strategy as well within his campaign. His supporters have done a significantly better job of “marketing” him online to under targeted/under represented demographics than the other major campaigns. The $ he was able to raise on Nov 5th was pretty startling, but ultimately he is going to have to get people to the polls. One technique that interests me is that his campaign web page prominently provides details on how to change listed party affiliation, in order that people normally listed as Democrats might swing the Republican nomination in his favor.
