I finally got around to seeing Serenity last night. I liked it a lot — definitely one of the best movies I’ve seen in a while. I’m glad I saw the series before seeing the film, but I think its a good show even if you haven’t.<\/p>\n
Serenity certainly deserves more than it has gotten in the box office, though I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m sure DVD sales will be strong. Certainly I will buy one, and I may even see it again in theaters. Update: 4.0\/5<\/ins><\/p>\n Analysis (Warning: Spoilers Follow) Dan<\/a> and I were talking afterwards and I was glad to hear he liked it more this time than the first time<\/a> he saw it. While we agreed that Wash’s death is completely unnecessary, the only reason we could see for it happening was that Wash was being written out of the script — which leads to the not-very-distant conclusion that Firefly is starting back up or that Serenity II is being planned, and Wash’s actor wanted out, or something just didn’t work out.<\/p>\n On the other hand, I felt that Book’s death was a useful addition to the plot, though I agree with Dan that it wastes a lot of interesting subplots for the future — nevertheless, I think it was gutsy of the creators of the movie to have a great character die for a good purpose in advancing the plot. On the other hand, it was hard for most of the characters to develop in the film’s two hours – this is probably the part that someone who hasn’t seen the series will miss the most. Also, the western feel that was present in so much of the series and really made this unique from other sci-fi failed to develop in a movie that saw the crew of serenity mostly visiting the more civilized worlds.
