Many Things

A lot has happened since my last real post — not only because my life has been considerably busier than usual, but also because I haven’t made a significant post in quite a while. So, I’m sure to forget something, but here is a synopsis:

– Went on a hike up Mt Teneriffe, near Mt Si, with Dave, Larry, and Tim. Dave, Tim and I summitted (see photos here)
– Took Statistics Midterm
– Went to Atlanta for the 2006 FIRST Robotics Competition Championship (Wednesday-Sunday two weeks ago)
– Talked to police officers while in Atlanta over a misunderstanding about patio usage at a hotel (we happened to be on the patio when someone threw something off, and we apparently got blamed)
– Left Atlanta with no awards, but got to watch some really exciting elimination matches on the Newton field
– Took two midterms my first full day back from Atlanta
– Crashed into a car on my way to work (Monday, one week ago)
– Paid the guy I crashed into for damages
… Guy I crashed into gave me his car (Now we are friends)
– Now I drive that car around
… It has nice cold air conditioning, a radio, and no rear window (my fault) or seats (taken out to carry more stuff by previous owner)
– Got statistics midterm back — 50% (WTF?!)
– Got Bioengineering midterm back — 87%
– Got ML programming assignment back — 20/30 — FACK
– Got ML midterm back — 65/75 — thats about right
– Took Discrete Structures midterm — felt good
– Hiked Rattlesnake Ridge, the long way, with Nick from work
– Won a couple of frisbee games

I am the architect of my own unhappiness

distant waves come crashing forth
a wary cry from the midnight sun
reaping winds of oft-sowed filth
unpleasant daze in soft remorse

walking weary wandering will
distressed unconscious moral blow
gravity deep consuming dark
arcane unknown despondent hulk

Worse Than Spammers

Sunday, sometime between 1:00 and 3:00, my bike was stolen while locked outside of the UW Instructional Center (IC), where I was attending an organic chemistry study session. The walk back to the house was a needlessly long one. My bike was my primary form of transportation around the area, and it made getting to class on time possible for a guy who is always running late. It also made getting back to the house after class much quicker enabling me to make it to work on time. It was a good source of exercise and was a lot of fun as well. And now someone, for a few quick bucks, took all of that away from me.

Mudrucking and Gravel

This morning two of my roommates and I got up early to dig out some dirt and replace it with gravel. The third roommate who drives, and who had indicated he would help out, made a brief appearance in his Jeep before driving off. This does nothing to help the relations between him and I, which at this point are already strained. Adam, you see, is my next door neighbor. He gave me a good initial impression when he outlined a bathroom cleaning plan with me that sounded like a good idea. Well after I did my part, and then his part, I see no evidence that he even noticed. But thats OK — I’ve gotten fairly used to occasionally cleaning up the war-zone kitchen, which is a rather thankless job. But it was a mark against him.

Over the course of the nearly two months I have been here, however, my opinion of Adam has steadily declined, while my opinion of my other roommates has generally slightly improved, or at worst stayed the same. Other incidents included him asking whose box a certain box was. It was mine, and it wasin community space, so I decided it was appropriate for me to take it outside, which I promptly did. He then replaced the box with a bag full of his books, which has not moved in over a week. He seems to think that his Jeep is too good to park on mud, so rather than park out of everyone’s way (or help turn the mud into gravel), he has on several occasions parked me in. He has by far th largest amount of kitchen cabinet space dedicated to himself. Just a bunch of little things, none of them important in the lest, but all of them rubbing m the wrong way.

So when his muddy soccer shoes showed up on top of my open Spaghetti package, I threw a bit of a tantrum. I kicked his shoes under the cabinets, threw my gum at them, and (gasp) put a roll of empty paper towels in his spacious food cabinet, because there was no room for it in the trash (and I didn’t want it on the counter). Apparently this last part made him angry, which led to him discovering that I was the culprit. So, yesterday evening he showed up at my door and asked, “Ryan, why do you have to get passive agreesive on me?”

At that point, I didn’t even know what he was talking about. I’d nearly forgotten about the “noodle incident” and it would have been a thing of the past until he brought it back up. When he mentioned the paper towel thing, I remembered the whole thing, and he mentioned that I should just be stright with him, and that he was “easy to get along with.” So I agreed, told him where his shoes were, and thats the last I heard from him. Until this morning, at about 5:00am, when he and one or two guests woke me from my peaceful slumber. I’m a pretty hardcore sleeper, so that feat alone was pretty impressive. Taking into account our earlier agreement, instead of building up quiet rage, I knocked on his door and told him to keep it down. He (or someone in his room, at least) agreed. It was quiet for about two minutes. I considered, briefly, 150 Watts of Bass directly into his ajoining wall, but settled for ear plugs, which worked wonderfully.

However, bearing in mind our agreement, I’m going to let him know, the next time I see him, that I’ll expect quiet from his room, or at the very most, I will knock once and I won’t hear him again fo the rest of the night.

–UPDATE–

I just talked to him and he has agreed.

Happy Valentine’s Day

I got to spend the day at school and the night reading and writing. In other news, the Lincoln Square Tower is a great place to study Organic Chemistry:

Ryan studies organic chemistry on floor 37 (or so)

Life In The District

So far, I am greatly enjoying living “on my own” again. Sure, I don’t own the place, but I feel like I’m in a good place. Certainly, the 8-minute ride to school is unbeatable — just long enough to make sure that I use the bike, just short enough that I don’t mind it. Furthermore, its downhill to class, and uphill back, so I get extra speed on my way there (which is exactly what I need) and a little workout on the way back (which I have found is also quite nice).

Yesterday, I went on a shopping spree before breaking the kitchen in by making some lasagna. I didn’t have the right tools to ix the mozzarella and ricotta, but other than the chunkiness of the cheese, it turned out quite well. My floormate Mario was attracted enough to the dish to offer me money to have some; instead I simply gave him a piece. As he’s in CSE 142, he’ll need such nourishment to make it through.

I get along with all of the housemates, but I still only remember two of their names: Dan and Mario. The guy who lives next door, the French exchange student, and the Asian dude upstairs, I need to hear a few more times before they stick I guess. No one has noticed, I don’t think. Speaking of names, I finally picked up the name of the girl who sits next to me in Biology. We exchanged names on the first day and then I promptly forgot hers. Reviewing things right before the test, however, I managed to see her name on her notes, and being a visual learner, I managed to remember it this time.

And speaking of Biology tests, the first one happened today. I feel that I did alright, with the exception of some memorization that I didn’t do. In hindsight, I should have known — in fact, I suspected that three of the four values would have been important, but I chose to believe the teacher when she said that her tests were about understanding concepts and not about memorization instead of going with my instincts and going over the numbers a few times. Oh well, I’ve learned and I’ll do better on the next one.
